Getting a job can be hard enough. But imagine how hard it can get when you have a disability that limits how much your body can take. Denise found herself in that very situation. With no job, no car, and children to care for, she reached a new level of determination that not many people can see.
When she came to the Job Center ready to enroll in Wisconsin Works (W-2), she wasn’t sure how she could become really self-sufficient with the amount of barriers stacked up against her. She worked closely with our W-2 Staff members Valerie and Jenny to get a plan that will work around her limitations and focus on her strengths. She attended workshops that helped her talk openly to employers and turn negatives into positives. No matter what happened, she never gave up and kept applying! She was placed in a Work Experience site at a local plant nursey. She was eventually hired on full-time, however, not long afterwards, many people’s hours were reduced. Denise didn’t let that get her down, and immediately went back to applying for jobs. She took all the skills she learned with us and was hired at a local restaurant to help keep her income steady. She is currently working two jobs and has a vehicle of her own! She said, “Jenny and Valerie are awesome… I appreciate everything they’ve done for me.”
